An Israelite temple was constructed the structures in a governmental fortress in southern Judah. While all agree that the structure functioned as a temple, scholars dispute the years the temple functioned and the date and cause of its demise. Other archaeologists contest the dating on the basis of the pottery and stratigraphic relationships. They suggest that the temple may not have been built until the late 8th or early 7th c.

One of the most significant changes in the religious life of ancient Israel occurred during the reign of the Judahite king Hezekiah , in the late eighth century B. What was his reform like on the ground? The archaeological remains come from Tel Arad , Tel Motza, Beer-Sheba , Tell Halif and Lachish —settlements with ninth- and eighth-century cultic places—to help us understand what actually happened.
Archaeology reveals that, with the exception of Tell Halif, these sites were part of the official Judahite cult under royal control, and it appears that they were all dismantled and buried. Photo: David Rafael Moulis. To demonstrate the kind of cultic change that took place, we go first to Arad. The altar was then abolished in the late eighth century by Hezekiah who prohibited sacrifice , but the shrine remained in use until the end of the seventh century, when it was partly dismantled by King Josiah, who allegedly centralized worship in Jerusalem.
Aharoni assumed that this was evidence of two different cultic reforms under two different kings—a view supported also by the Bible 2 Kings As a result, the temple area is well preserved, and nothing in the temple points to a violent destruction. Archaeology indicates that the burial of Arad happened at the order from Jerusalem and was supposed to disempower the local priests and to centralize the cult to the capital city.
This means that the sanctuary and its cultic objects were abolished and buried well before the Arad fortress fell in the hands of the Assyrian army, after only 30 or 50 years of existence. From Arad, we move west to Beer-Sheba.

Upon their discovery, the ostraca of Tell Arad proved to be exceptionally informative as to how the fortress of Arad operated. Tell Arad is situated on the southern slope of the Judaean Hills, facing the Beersheba valley,a way station between Arabia, the northern highland of Judah, and the western coastal plain. The site consists of a mound — a crater formed by horseshoe hills.
This crater was useful for collecting run-off water if one were to dam the opening. The earliest occupation of Arad dates to the Chalcolithic period. In the site was jointly excavated by Ruth Amiran and Yohanan Aharoni.
Analysis of the material on two Iron Age altars discovered at the entrance to the “holy of holies” of a shrine at Tel Arad in the Beer-sheba Valley, Israel, were found to contain cannabis and frankincense, according to new article in the journal, Tel Aviv. Past excavations revealed two superimposed fortresses, dated to the 9th to early 6th centuries BCE, which guarded the southern border of biblical Judah.
