Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes But it's the only thing that I know And when it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes It is the only thing that makes us feel alive. We keep this love in a photograph We made these memories for ourselves Where our eyes are never closing Our hearts were never broken, and time's forever frozen still. So you can keep me Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans Holding me close until our eyes meet You won't ever be alone, wait for me to come home.

Ed Sheeran was born in February in Halifax, England. He began playing guitar at a young age and soon after started writing his own songs. When he was just a teenager, he moved to London to pursue his music, and his outpouring of creativity added up to several early EPs and hundreds of live shows. Drawing attention for his online performances, Sheeran hit No. Since signing with Atlantic, Sheeran has sold millions of records, had a song appear in the second installment of The Hobbit trilogy and won Grammys for hits like "Thinking Out Loud" and "Shape of You"

It started life as a "piano loop playing on [McDaid's] laptop" which Sheeran started singing along to. Sheeran has stated "it will be the one that will change my career path", and believes it to be the one song that will sell the album, even "if the rest of the album is shit". Described as "[Sheeran's] Angels" the song is a "ballad with big drums, set in New York". On 22 April , Sheeran announced that Photograph will be released as the fifth single off "x" via social media platform Twitter. In a Billboard track-by-track review, writer Jason Lipshutz stated: "Sheeran opens on "Photograph," presenting the lynchpin line of the whole album. Over a few hesitant acoustic strums, Sheeran tiptoes forward with some restrained crooning before the arena drums kick in.

Sheeran wrote the song with Snow Patrol member, Johnny McDaid , who had a piano loop from which the composition developed. After recording several versions with other producers, Sheeran eventually solicited help from Jeff Bhasker ; the collaboration generated a version that Bhasker further enhanced for months. The ballad derives its music primarily from an acoustic guitar, piano and programmed drums. With visually descriptive lyrics, it discusses a long-distance relationship inspired by Sheeran's own experience of being away from his then-girlfriend while he was on tour. The song received generally positive commentary from critics, who noted the lyrics and Sheeran's use of love for all people. It reached the top five on the main singles charts in more than five countries.
