It premiered on October 3, Nucky Thompson negotiates a favorable deal with African American bootlegger Chalky White but is forced to renegotiate when Chalky's driver is lynched. Jimmy Darmody is identified as one of the shooters in the Hammonton hijacking in a dying admission by the sole survivor. Nucky orders Jimmy out of town and he leaves on the Broadway Limited train after an argument with Angela. Fred Armstrong as Player 2 2.

Nucky banishes Jimmy from Atlantic City, while Margaret gets into the lingerie trade. She wanted him to go to college. But things change; instead, Jimmy went to war and started working for Nucky. All Jimmy owns now is a copy of Free Air and a head full of haunting audioscapes from battle. They used to talk about books; now all he can talk about is guns.

Call it public inappropriateness, or immodesty, but this episode was full of people saying or doing things beyond the bounds of social niceties, in ways that revealed something about their character—and that in some cases revealed some of the weaknesses of this series thus far. The immodesty here comes via his common-law wife Angela, who posed for a suggestive photograph—shoulders bared, eying the camera seductively—while Jimmy was overseas fighting in WWI. But alas.

Episode two ended with the discovery that one of the bullet-ridden victims from the robbery of the whiskey shipment had managed stay alive in the woods by virtue of being fat. This episode opens with the bloody man being pushed on a hospital bed. Elias, who needs to brush up on his bedside manner, attempts to suffocate him with his own pillow, but is interrupted by a persistent Agent Van Alden.

Agent Van Alden learns that Jimmy was involved in the shooting in the woods. Nucky orders Eli to murder the robbery survivor to prevent him from providing testimony, then leaves to meet with Chalky and complete their bootlegging arrangements. Eli attempts to smother the witness, but is interrupted by Van Alden, who uses a ruse to take the survivor into federal custody. Nucky arranges for Margaret to be hired at a dress shop, where she learns another worker was fired to make room for her.
