Designed and built as a machine for masting vessels, falls into disuse because of the changing technologies of naval engineering. The aim of the project — the winner of the design competition launched in by the Arsenale di Venezia Spa — is to ensure the conservation and enhancement of the spatiality of the historic building, combining the needs arising from the insertion of new features to turn it into a cultural center. The building is tripartite in its interior. On the ground floor are organized spaces for the reception and a conference room. On the first floor is an exhibition area.

The Venetian Arsenal Italian : Arsenale di Venezia is a complex of former shipyards and armories clustered together in the city of Venice in northern Italy. Owned by the state, the Arsenal was responsible for the bulk of the Venetian republic 's naval power during the middle part of the second millennium AD. It was "one of the earliest large-scale industrial enterprises in history". Construction of the Arsenal began around , during Venice's republican era. The Arsenal produced the majority of Venice's maritime trading vessels, which generated much of the city's economic wealth and power, lasting until the fall of the republic to Napoleon 's conquest of the area in The Byzantine -style establishment may have existed as early as the 8th century, though the present structure is usually said to have been begun in during the reign of Ordelafo Faliero , although there is no evidence for such a precise date.
I'm not sure if there's tourists can access it, it seems to be a military installation, but the facade looks very impressive. Been to Venice a few times and never came to this area. Very glad we ventured here this time if, for nothing else, it was a break from the crowds. Tons of cafes and restaurants in this richly historical part of the city. Followed a sign beside a canal to Arsenale. Very attractive.
